Ora “Nanny” Herrell

Ora “Nanny” Herrell, age 97, Erwin, passed away peacefully on Monday, July 16, 2018 at the Center On Aging and Health while she was surrounded by her loving family. She was born in Bakersville, NC and lived in North Carolina before moving to Erwin in 1956. Ora was a daughter of the late Claude and Texi Peterson Bennett.

She retired from Texas Instrument in 1986 as an assembly line employee. After her retirement, Ora was employed as a hostess at Hardee’s for several years. She left her position at Hardee’s and began volunteering at Center On Aging and Health and Erwin Health Care Center for many years.

Ora was a member of Southside Freewill Baptist Church where she was a honorary member of the Ladies Auxiliary.

She was a loving, devoted mother and nanny to all her grandchildren, great grandchildren and great-great grandchildren. Ora was “nanny” to everyone who came to visit her family’s home. She enjoyed UCHS football and baseball. Ora was an avid Atlanta Braves fan. Also, she loved to shop for shoes!

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of sixty-two years, Homer Herrell; one son, Douglas “Cricket” Harrell; two brothers: Claude Bennett, Jr. and I.M. Bennett; four sisters: Ethel McCurry, Jewell Bennett, Belvie Branch and Mabel McCurry.

Ora leaves behind to cherish her legacy and many wonderful memories, very special daughter-in-law, Phyllis Harrell; three grandchildren: Terry Harrell and wife, Linda, Susan Mason and husband, Denny, Sherry Harrell, all of Erwin; five great grandchildren: Jennifer White and husband, Chase, Jessica Kantsos and husband, Seth, Austin Harrell and wife, Kimberly, Hannah Peterson and Haley Peterson; five great-great grandchildren: Jacob Stephenson, Eli Johnson, Hunter Harrell, Ciara White and Tanner White; several nieces and nephews also survive.

The family will receive friends from 5:00-7:00 P.M. on Wednesday, July 18, 2018 at the Southside Freewill Baptist Church. Reverend Kevin Laws will officiate at the 7:00 P.M. service. Music will be provided by Kevin Laws, Bobby Ramsey and Danny Miller. Committal will be held at 11:00 A.M. on Thursday in the Roselawn Memory Gardens. Active pallbearers will be Gary Willis, Terry Willis, Toby Bennett, Denny Mason and Chase White. Honorary pallbearers will be Seth Kantsos, Tanner White, Jacob Stephenson, Eli Johnson, Mark Garland, Edd Phillips, Seth Phillips, J. D. McCurry and David McCurry. Everyone is asked to meet at the funeral home by 10:30 A.M. Thursday to go in procession to the cemetery.

The family would like to extend their gratitude toward the entire staff at Center On Aging and Health and Amedisys Hospice for all the love and care given to Ora.
