Nova Brenda Smith, 70, Wilson, N.C., died Sunday, June 12, 2011, surrounded by family in the Palliative Care Unit at Wilson Medical Center, after a brief, but fierce battle with small cell lung cancer.
She was born in Erwin on Oct. 7, 1940. After graduating from high school in Unicoi County, she served in the U.S. Air Force as a telephone operator in Omaha, Neb. She was a retiree from Harris Teeter in Wilson, N.C., where she worked for more than 13 years. She was a devoted mother and grandmother and always put others before her needs.
She was preceded in death by her father, Culver Smith, mother, Nell Smith, brother, Doug Smith and sister, Shirley Couch.
Survivors include her two daughters: Sonja Hayes and husband Scott, Wilson, N.C., and Lynn Foltz, Wesley Chapel, Fla.; son: Keith Foltz, Temple Terrace, Fla.; grandson: Eric Hayes, Wilson, N.C.; sister: Barbara Whitson, and nieces: Vicki Masters, Missy Hann, Ginger Johnson, Penny Whitson, Alicia Silvers, Tiffany Adkins, and several aunts, uncles, and cousins, Erwin.
She has chosen to donate her body to science. A private scattering of ashes will take place at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the American Lung Association, or the American Cancer Society.
