Norma Jean Garland, age 85, 1208 N. Main Ave., Erwin, died early Saturday morning, Feb. 19, 2011, at her home.
She was a lifelong resident of Erwin and a daughter of the late Charles Rhoton and Lola McLaughlin Hicks.
She was a longtime member of First Baptist Church, Erwin.
Mrs. Garland was a board member of Erwin Housing authority for many years.
Her most enjoyable activity was being a loving grandmother to her four grandchildren, Allison, Parker, Will and Lily Garland.
In addition to her parents, Mrs. Garland was preceded in death by her husband, William P. Garland, who died in January of 1996; four brothers, Kenneth Hicks, Gordon Hicks, Harry Hicks and Mack Hicks; and two sisters: Margaret Kellett and Helen Hendrix.
Survivors include two sons, Larry Garland, Erwin, and William P. “Bill” Garland and wife Patricia, Ridgefield, Conn.; four grandchildren, Allison, Parker, Will and Lily Garland; one sister, Jennie Keesecker, a resident of Unicoi County Memorial Hospital’s long-term care unit, Erwin; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were conducted at 2 p.m. Monday, Feb. 21, from the Robert Ledford Funeral Home Chapel, Erwin, with the Rev. Tony Rutherford officiating. Special music was provided by Teresa Jones Treadway and Inez Chandler.
Interment followed at Evergreen Cemetery.
Pallbearers were Bill Padgett, John Padgett, Dennis Clarke, Lee Brown, Virgil Moore, Lester Bailey and Lynn Erwin.
