Michael Thomas VanHaverbeke, age 69, of Erwin, passed away on Friday, May 6, 2016 at the Sycamore Sholes Hospital in Elizabethton. Born In Louisville, KY on May 23, 1946, he was a son of Margaret Crawford VanHaverbeke of Louisville, KY and the late Gerard VanHaverbeke. Mr. VanHaverbeke had an Associate of Christian Ministries from the Southern Baptist Seminary. He worked as a Carman for CSX Transportation. He was a member of Fishery Community Church in Erwin. He loved to play the piano. Mr. VanHaverbeke was a Vietnam Veteran serving in the US Army.

In addition to his father, he is preceded in death by a son, Timothy VanHaverbeke, Nephew, Randy VanHaverbeke, Sister-in-law, Sharon VanHaverbeke, Mother-in-law, Juanita Choate, Father-in-law, Ernest Choate and Brother-in-law, Don Choate.


In addition to his mother, Michael VanHaverbeke has left behind to cherish his memory:

Sisters:             Mary Margaret Ferman and her husband Richard of Jacksonville, FL,

Jane Beckner and her husband Richard of Buckner, KY,

Doris Marie Schmitt of Cincinnati, OH,

Sarah Dyroff of Fall Brook, CA,

Several nieces and Nephews

And a host of friends.


A visitation period to share memories and offer support to the family will begin at 2:00 PM Sunday, May 8, 2016 in the chapel of Valley Funeral Home and will continue until 7:00 PM.

The family respectfully requests the honor of your presence as we offer tribute and remember the life of Michael VanHaverbeke in a funeral service to be held at 2:00 PM, Monday, May 9, 2016 in the Chapel of Valley Funeral Home with Rev. Rusty Wishon and Dr. Mike Oaks officiating. A graveside committal service will follow at Evergreen Cemetery.
