Mary Martin Zavist

Mary Martin Zavist, age 88, died Sunday, March 25, 2012. She was born in Chicago, Ill. to the late James Harold and Mary Smith Martin.
She had resided in Erwin for over 31 years at the home of her daughter, Mary Moughon.
Mrs. Zavist lived a full life, raising four children. She served her country as a postal clerk in the U.S. Navy during World War II, graduated from Chicago Teacher’s College and then taught elementary school teacher in Schenectady, N.Y. before moving to Louisville, Ky. She most recently volunteered as a docent at the J.B. Speed Art Museum in Louisville.
Mrs. Zavist was a member of the Church of the Epiphany, Louisville, Ky. She transferred her membership to St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Johnson City, and then attended the Catholic Community of Unicoi County.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Algerd Frank Zavist, in 1987 and her sister, Sister Margaret Ruth O.P.
Survivors include three sons: James Zavist and wife Mindy, St. Louis, Mo., Patrick Zavist, Linden, N.J., Thomas Zavist and wife Jenny East Windsor, N.J.; one daughter: Mary Moughon and husband Dr. Gordon Moughon, Erwin; one brother: James Martin and wife Anne McDonnell; one sister: Anita Olsen and husband Bob, Chicago, Ill.; eight grandchildren: Joel, Luke and wife Emily, Timothy and wife Rebekah, Hannah, Joseph, Micah, Stephen, and Elisabeth Moughon; two great-grandsons: Caleb and Christopher and four nieces and one nephew.
A memorial mass for Mrs. Zavist will be celebrated at 10 a.m., Friday April 13, from the Church of the Epiphany, Louisville, Ky. The committal service will follow and she will be buried with her husband in Zachary Taylor National Cemetery, Lousiville, Ky.
