Lucy Chaffin, age 96, of Erwin, passed away, on Monday, March 19, 2018 at the Johnson City Medical Center. Lucy was a native of Newcastle, PA and a daughter of the late Bronislaw and Stella (Majewski) Gumiezny. She joined the United States Women’s Army Air Corps in August, 1943 and served in Europe during World War II. She met her future husband, A. L. Chaffin, in Vienna where he was serving in the Army. They married after the war and were married for 62 years. Lucy was a member of Ninth Street Baptist Church in Erwin. She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother and great grandmother, and an excellent seamstress and pastry chef. She enjoyed her flowers and friends and especially her grandchildren. In addition to her parents and husband, Lucy is preceded in death by three brothers, one sister, brother and sister-in-law, Harold and Garnet Rudder, and granddaughter, Amy R. Rawlins.

The family would like to offer special thanks to the staff at the Unicoi County Memorial Hospital Emergency Room, the 5300 floor of the Johnson City Medical Center and the staff and nurses at Governor’s Bend in Erwin.
The family respectfully requests the honor of your presence as we offer tribute and remember the life of Lucy Chaffin in a funeral service to be held at 7:00 PM on Thursday, March 22, 2018 in the chapel at Valley Funeral Home. Brother Rick Babin will officiate. A visitation period to share memories and offer support to the family will begin at 5:00 PM and will continue until service time on Thursday, March 22, 2018. A committal service will be held at 11:00 AM on Friday, March 23, 2018 in Roselawn Memory Gardens. Those attending will meet at Roselawn Memory Gardens by 10:50 AM for the service. Pallbearers will be her grandsons: Brian, Adam and Jay and great grandsons: Gavin, Drew and Eli.
