Lewis France Ray

Lewis France Ray, 83, husband of Irene Silvers Ray, of Greenville, died Wednesday, February 9, 2022.

Born in Flag Pond, TN, he was the son of the late Waco and Sarepta Hensley Ray. Mr. Ray traveled to Newport News, VA to attend The Apprentice School. Upon graduation, he did design work on US Naval submarines. He furthered his education at East Tennessee State University. He later moved his family to Greenville, South Carolina where he enjoyed family, fellowship, and work for almost 50 years. Lewis was a member of Greenville First Church of the Nazarene, where he enjoyed participating in numerous Work and Witness mission trips. After retirement, he obtained his ministry ordination and continued his education though classes in divinity and Christian theology.

A devoted husband, father, and grandfather, he took a reserved pride in the achievements of his family, especially those of his beloved granddaughters.

In addition to his wife of 57 years, he is survived by daughter Myra Ray Hayes and her husband, John; two granddaughters, Sydney Hayes, and Ansley Hayes; and sister, Charlotte Ray Shelton.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his son, Thomas “Tommy” Ray.

Visitation and funeral services were held Friday, February 18, 2022, at Thomas McAfee Funeral Home, Downtown in Greenville, SC. The burial and graveside service were held afterwards in Greenville Memorial Gardens.
