L. J. Steffey

L. J. Steffey, age 89, of Erwin, died Friday, July 6, 2012. He was a native of Dante, Va., and a son of the late James S. and Kate McConnell Steffey.
He was a World War II veteran, a Corporal in Company C, 866th Engineer Aviation Battalion in the U. S. Army. He retired as a conductor from the former Clinchfield Railroad. He was a member of Calvary Baptist Church.
In addition to his parents, he was also preceded in death by his wife, Jewel Steffey, in 2005.
Survivors include a daughter: Deborah and Ken Ramey of Johnson City; sons: Michael L. Steffey of Erwin and William Randolph and Pat Steffey of Shelby, N.C.; brother: Howard T. “Ted” Steffey of Kingsport; sisters: Louella P. Jessee of Castlewood, Va. and Alma Merita “Rita” and Joe Bates of Jonesborough; 9 grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren.
A funeral service was held Sunday, July 8, at 1 p.m., at Calvary Baptist Church. The Rev. David Crutchfield officiated and Bruce Grubb offered the eulogy.
Entombment followed in the Mausoleum at Roselawn Memory Gardens. Men of the church served as active pallbearers. Members of the Regular Fellows Sunday School Class, Calvary Baptist Church and friends of the Spar Track, Dante, Va. were named as honorary pallbearers.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Regular Fellows Sunday School Class c/o Calvary Baptist Church, 540 Adams St., Erwin, TN 37650.
