Joyce Y. Forbes, 67, of Unicoi, passed away, Sunday, March 27, 2011, following a courageous battle with cancer.
She was born in Carroll County, Md. and resided in Maryland until moving to Mitchell County, N.C. She had resided in Unicoi County for the past 15 years. She was a daughter of the late Fred F. and Polly Garland Yelton.
Mrs. Forbes was also preceded in death by a brother, Cecil Yelton, and one sister, Ruby Forbes.
She is survived by her devoted husband of 48 years, William “Bill” Forbes; two brothers: Joseph Yelton and wife Hilda of Finksburg, Md., and Charles T. Yelton and wife Ying of Port Charlotte, Fla.; a sister: Donna Lang and husband Wallace, Greencastle, Pa. She is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews.
Mrs. Forbes was a member of the Unicoi United Methodist Church.
While living in North Carolina, Mrs. Forbes spent many years as a dedicated adult Sunday school class teacher at Red Hill United Methodist Church. She was employed at the Johnson City location of Home Depot where she was a valued and much loved employee.
The family will receive friends Wednesday, March 30, from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the Erwin Memorial Funeral Home. Service will follow with the Rev. Garland James officiating.
Active pallbearers are: Wallace Lang, Carl Whitson, Anthony Webb, Criss Yelton, Christian Marciano, and George Ritchie. Honorary pallbearers are: Jerry Ramsey, Odell Street, Rick Parshall, Jack Jones and Jim Forbes. Also selected are the men of the New Beginning Sunday School Class.
The committal service will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday, March 31, in the Roselawn Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial donations be made to the following: American Cancer Society, Memorial Foundation Hope Lodge, 2008 Charlotte Ave., Nashville, Tenn., 37203 or to the Unicoi United Methodist Church Building Fund, 702 Virginia St., Unicoi, Tenn., 37692.
