John Wesley Jones

John Wesley Jones, 76, of Erwin, passed away on Tuesday, December 2, at Lakebridge Health Care Center in Johnson City. Mr. Jones was born in Erwin, on September 17, 1938, a son of the late Hiram and Carrie Miller Jones. John was beloved by everyone he met as a kind, caring and helpful friend. He was a loving husband, father and grandfather, “Papa”.
He married Mary Frances Edwards of Erwin in 1961 where the couple soon moved to Alaska. There, he began a career as a trucker and played a role in the construction of the Alaskan oil pipeline. Upon his retirement, he and his family returned to his native Erwin to provide maintenance services to several businesses. Mr. Jones was a member of the Ninth Street Baptist Church choir and the church’s Friendship Sunday school class, and served the church on numerous committees. In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his wife of 52 years, Mary Frances Jones and sisters: Eva Hughes, Mary Hughes, and Nora Dean Oaks; brothers: Clarence, H. A., Orlando, David, and Charlie Jones. John is survived by his sisters, Betty Adkins of Erwin, and Melba Sneed of Michigan.
Left to cherish his memory: son, John “Steven” Jones and wife, Julia, Gray, and daughter, Teresa Jones Treadway, and husband, Tony, as well as his “number one” grandson, Wesley Holt Higgins, of Johnson City. Also, June Barham, his mother-in-law, of Erwin, and numerous nieces and nephews.
The family wishes to thank those who provided a loving and caring environment for John in his final years at Pine Oaks Assisted Living Center and Lakebridge Health Care Center in Johnson City.
A graveside service for John Wesley Jones will was held at 1:00 PM, Friday, December 5, 2014, at Roselawn Memory Gardens in Johnson City. The Rev. David Lyle and Rev. Rob Moor will officiate. Those who wish to attend a brief memorial service may assemble at the mausoleum chapel by 12:50 PM, on Friday.
Active pallbearers will be: Bob Minton, Kenny Ervin, Wesley Higgins, Tony Treadway, Joey Lewis, and Steven Jones. Honorary pallbearers will be members of the Ninth Street Baptist Church Friendship class.
In Lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Ninth Street Baptist Church, corner of 9th and Prince Street, Erwin, TN or Niswonger Children’s Hospital of Johnson City.
