Janice Jones Johnson

Janice Johnson Newspaper and PortJanice Jones Johnson, age 82, of Erwin, passed away on Tuesday, March 28, 2017 at Governor’s Bend Retirement and Assisted Living. A native of Erwin, she was a daughter of the late Earl Franklin Jones and Lula Higgins Jones. Janice has been a member of Ninth Street Baptist Church for 76 years, where she was the Director of Preschool, part time Choir Director, piano player and soloist. Janice was a member of several gospel quartets during her life and she sang at numerous funerals and weddings. Janice served as Deputy Trustee for Unicoi County for 50 years and holds the record for the longest serving person in the state of Tennessee system. She volunteered at the Clinchfield Senior Adult Center where she led singing. Janice was first runner-up Miss Senior Tennessee and she held the titles of Miss Congeniality Tennessee, Mrs. Senior Appalachian Fair and Mrs. Senior Apple Festival. She was a member of the Erwin Monday Club, Clinchfield Lines (line dancing), the Red Hat Society, Daughters of the Confederacy, Meals on Wheels, Clinchfield Historical Society and she was a 35 year member of the Kiwanis Club, where she served 10 years as Secretary and Treasurer. Janice led several different charities and was a senior clothing model. She worked for the American Cancer Society where she was the one time President and she led Relay for Life several times. Most importantly, she loved her church. In addition to her parents, Janice was preceded in death by her husband, Sherlin Lawrence Johnson; mother-in-law, Cora Lee Johnson; father-in-law, Homer Johnson; sisters, Margaret Phillips and Carol Capps; brother, Woodward Jones.

Daughter: Penny A. Smith, of Elizabethton, TN;

Grandchildren: Laci Woods;

Caroline Johnson;

Terry Johnson, Jr.;

Thomas Johnson;

Zach Connelly;

Jake Connelly;

Uncle: Jack Higgins and wife June, of Jonesborough, TN;

Many cousins, nieces and nephews;

She will always cherish her special friend, Billie Grace Peterson.

 

The family respectfully requests the honor of your presence as we offer tribute and remember the life of Janice Jones Johnson in a Celebration of Life service to be at 11:00 AM, Saturday, April 1, 2017, at Ninth Street Baptist Church, 310 9th Street, Erwin, TN. Brother Rick Babin will officiate. A visitation period to share memories and offer support to the family will begin at 5:00 PM and continue until 8:00 PM on Friday, March 31, 2017, at Valley Funeral Home. A committal service will follow the 11:00 AM Celebration of Life service on Saturday, April 1, 2017, at Evergreen Cemetery. Deacons of Ninth Street Baptist Church will serve as pallbearers.

 

The family requests that, in lieu of flowers, memorial donations be made in her name to Ninth Street Baptist Church Capital Improvements Fund, 310 9th Street, Erwin, TN 37650.
