James Powers, age 73, Unicoi, beloved husband of Lisa Luanne Powers, went to be with the Lord Wednesday, June 12, 2013. He died unexpectedly at h is home with his grandson, Jeremiah, by his side. James was born in Unicoi, Tennessee, and the youngest son of the late Walter Mac and Nettie Myrtle Derafield Powers. Other than his parents he was preceded in death by five brothers: Art Powers, Mac Powers, Hank Powers, Willard Powers and Truman Powers, one sister, Mae Powers and the mother of James' children, Pat Powers.
James was a lifelong member of the Unicoi Church of God where his mother was a founding member. James loved the Lord wholeheartedly, witnessing to everyone, and always eager to share the gospel. He carried a heavy burden for the lost and never missed an opportunity to share his faith. James was a machinist most his life, working for Texas Instruments, Seimens Corporation, and running his own business for many years. James' roots ran deep in Unicoi County, and he would be described by those who knew him as an incredibly special man with a beautiful smile, having the gift of making you laugh, even in the worst of times. He was loved by everyone who had the blessing of knowing him. James was a talented musician, who played the guitar, and sang with his brothers for years in Michigan and Tennessee where they were known as the Powers Brothers. He sang later with his wife in bluegrass and gospel groups. Music was always an important part of his life. James loved to pick w ith his music pals, especially Edison Wallin of Unicoi, who was like a brother to James, and Max Dutton of Georgia. Having a zest for life, James loved farming and riding on his tractor. He spent the last three years in Georgia with his wife, enjoying precious time together, making new friends, and traveling.
Mr. Powers is survived by his loving wife of 23 years, Lisa Luanne Powers, twin sons: James Dee Powers, and wife, Candy, and Donald Lee Powers and wife, Maria Nieves, all of Unicoi; one daughter, Melissa Powers, Unicoi; six grandsons: Jeremiah, James, Jacob, Donovan, Eric, and Daniel Powers, Unicoi; three granddaughters: Donna, Thalia, and Sofia; one brother, Page Powers, and wife, June, Unicoi; two sisters- in- law: Bea Powers, Erwin, and Dorothy Powers, Unicoi. Many cherished nieces and nephews also survive as well as his beloved pups, Savannah and Brodie.
A Celebration of Life and Home Going will be held Friday, June 14, 2013 at 7:00 pm from the Unicoi Church of God with Bishop Ronnie Holloway, Reverend Tim Hyde and Reverend Ralph Crass officiating. A special eulogy will be delivered by Tony Perez with music provided by family and friends of James. Active pallbearers will be nephews: Terry Powers, Wayne Powers, Ronnie Johnson, Randy Shelton, David Powers, and Kevin Powers.
Interment will be Saturday, June 14, 2013 at 11:00 am in Evergreen Cemetery. Those attending the committal service are asked to meet at Unicoi Funeral Home by 10:30 am to go in procession to the cemetery.
The family will receive friends Friday at the Unicoi Church of God prior to the funeral service, between the hours of 5:00 pm to 7:00 pm.
All floral deliveries should be made to Unicoi Church of God after 12:00 noon Friday.
