James Emery Blevins, age 85, of Erwin, died Sunday, Jan. 6, 2013, at the residence of his son. He lived in Bumpass Cove most of his life and was a son of the late Emery and Judneal Laws Blevins.
He served in the U. S. Army and later retired in 1992 from Hoover Ball, where he did maintenance. He was a member of Mt. O’Dale Freewill Baptist Church, where he served as an Elder Deacon and previously a Sunday school teacher.
In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his wife: Frances I. Miller Blevins.
Survivors include a son: Daniel Blevins and his wife Brenda, of Erwin; daughter: Rosie Blevins Thomas and her husband Randall Thomas, of Erwin; brother: Charles Blevins and his wife Frankie, of Richmond Ind.; sisters: Ada Mae Bearfield, Richmond Ind., Judy Henley and her husband Archie, of Jonesborough, Lucille Elliott and her husband Ernest, of Erwin; grandchildren: James R. Blevins, Jadia Thomas, Jonah Thomas, Robbin Gray and her husband Chris and Crystal Doan and her husband Charles; great-grandchild: Hunter Gray; and special caregiver: daughter-in law, Brenda L. Blevins.
Funeral service will be held at 1 p.m., Thursday, Jan. 10, at the Mt. O’Dale Freewill Baptist Church. The Rev. David Greene and the Rev. Randy Bolden will officiate. A eulogy will be given by Chaplain Tim Evans. Interment will follow at Bumpass Cove Cemetery.
Pallbearers will be Randy Thomas, James R. Blevins, Chris Gray, Maynard Tipton, Dwayne Henley and Jon Phillips. Honorary pallbearers will be Charles Miller, Matt Silvers, David Higgins, Dwayne Riddle, Calvin Lester and Archie Henley.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m., Wednesday, Jan. 9, in the Chapel of Valley Funeral Home and at the home of his son, Daniel Blevins, 1132 Brinkley Road, Erwin.
