Ira “Pete” Rutter

Ira “Pete” Rutter, age 78, Rutter Lane, Erwin, passed away on Tuesday, June 12, 2018, at Unicoi County Memorial Hospital Long Term Care Unit after a lengthy illness. He was a lifelong resident of Unicoi County and son of the late Willard Brown Rutter and Mary Jane Williams Rutter.

Mr. Rutter was a United States Navy Veteran. He taught at Rock Creek Elementary for twenty-one years before his retirement. Mr. Rutter was Teacher of the Year for grades 5-8 in 1996-1997. Also, he was awarded Conservation Teacher of the Year in 1996-1997.

Pete served on the Care and Share Board for three years and was a member of the Erwin Centennial Masonic Lodge #491 F&AM for fifty-three years.

In addition to his parents, Pete was preceded in death by his loving wife of fifty-two years, Patricia Rutter on June 9, 2012; son, Ira Craig Rutter, on August 7, 2008; infant son, Jeffery Dale Rutter; one brother, Willard “Sonny” Rutter.

He leaves behind to cherish his memory, one daughter, April Danielle Britt, Johnson City; two grandsons: Liam and Jeffery Rutter; three great grandchildren: Jaxon Treadway, Henry Britt and Josephine Britt; two half-sisters: Mary Thorpe and husband, Jim, Lisa Isaacs, all of Alliance, OH; several nieces and nephews also survive.

The family would like to extend a special, heartfelt thank you to Pete’s special friend, Harley Bailey.

Graveside service will be held at 10:00 A.M. on Monday, June 18, 2018 in the Evergreen Cemetery. Reverend E. L. Wheeler will officiate. Everyone is asked to meet at the cemetery by 9:50 A.M. on Monday.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be made in memory of Pete to: Maranatha Tabernacle Church, P. O. Box 963, Erwin, TN 37650.
