Helena Jewell Dunbar, age 97, of Erwin, passed away Thursday, April 17, 2014 at the Unicoi County Memorial Hospital. She was a native of Washington County and a daughter of the late J.R., Sr. and Sallie Elizabeth Broyles Dunbar. Ms. Dunbar graduated from East Tennessee State University with a Bachelor of Science Degree. She taught school at Martins Chapel and UCHS. While at UCHS she taught typing, other business related subjects, and history. Jewell was a charter member of Evergreen Free Will Baptist Church since the 1920s, formerly Hazens Chapel Free Will Baptist. She served as clerk of the Eastern Quarterly Meeting of the Union Association. Helena worked in the Ladies Auxiliary on the local level, district level, and the association level. She attended every national convention of the FWB that she was able to. She was an officer at the Sunday School Convention of the Union Association. She was a member of the Business and Professional Womens Club. Jewell coordinated and directed Vacation Bible School for many years and held two week long Bible Schools. She directed many church dramas, was active in the youth work on the association level, took the youth to many youth meetings, and was instrumental in establishing the permanent Free Will Baptist Camp on Camp Creek in Greeneville, TN. At her church she spearheaded the organization of the Womens Auxiliary serving as president and held many other offices. She also served in various offices of the district and associational Women Nationally Active for Christ. At her church she organized an auxiliary for young girls called the Go-Tell Auxiliary. Jewell also served as church secretary for many years. In addition to her parents Jewell is preceded in death by brothers; Warren Dunbar, J.R. Dunbar, Jr., and Calvin Dunbar and one nephew, John Dunbar.

The family respectfully requests your presence as we honor and remember the life of Helena Jewell Dunbar in a committal service to be at 11:30 AM on Monday, April 21, 2014 at Evergreen Cemetery. Reverend Talmadge Brown will officiate. Those who will attend are asked to meet at Valley Funeral Home by 10:30 AM to go in procession to Evergreen Cemetery.
