LAUREL – Harvey Edgar Franklin, Sr., 86, of Laurel, passed away Tuesday, March 26, 2013 at the JFK Solace Center.
Mr. Franklin was born October 6, 1926 in Madison County. He proudly served in the US Army. Harvey taught school and coached for 39 years in Swain, Buncombe and Madison Counties. He coached nine championship teams and ran a 38 game winning streak over a four year period. He was a principal at Whittier Elementary School in Swain County. Mr. Franklin was a faithful church member, deacon and Sunday School Teacher at Chapel Hill Baptist Church. He was a member of the Lions Club and the Gideons. Mr. Franklin also served with Jail Ministry teams. Harvey’s pride and joy was his family.
Mr. Franklin’s “philosophy as a teacher and as a Christian Citizen is that all people are valuable. I know that the students I teach are the potential leaders of our world. I have always taught practical living methods and stood for sound values. I believe in a student being honest and doing what he is capable of doing. I enjoy talking to my students and hearing them talk about the important events in their life. I follow up on students as they grow into adult life. I especially enjoy keeping up with the athlete who makes the high school and college team.”
Harvey was preceded in death by his parents, Ed and Minnie Rice Franklin; two sisters, Grace Lewis and Emily Wallin.
Surviving are his wife, Janie Edwards Franklin; daughter, Cynthia Jane Belcher (Scott); sons, Harvey E. Franklin, Jr. (Debra), William Bradley Franklin (Carla) and Edwin Stuart Franklin (Rachel); nine grandchildren, Nicholas, Samantha, Heather, Amanda, Aaron, Allison, Bonnie, Jenna and Cassidy; one great-grandson, Ben Branscum; a brother, Bula Franklin (Glendora) of Laurel; three nieces and three nephews; and great-nieces and nephews.
Funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, March 30, 2013 at the Chapel Hill Baptist Church with Reverends Joe Tomberlin and Aaron Edwards officiating. A Eulogy will be given by Harvey Franklin, Jr. Burial will follow in Greenelawn Memory Gardens, Greeneville, TN.
The family will receive friends from 5 – 7 p.m. Friday, March 29, 2013 at Madison Funeral Home.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Hospice of Madison, P.O. Box 69, Marshall, NC 28753; however, flowers are acceptable and appreciated.
