Harold Lee “Bubba” Byrd, age 45, 1205 Right Higgins Creek Road, Flag Pond, went home to be with the Lord Friday evening, August 16, 2013, at his home. He was a lifelong resident of Unicoi County, son of Harold and Mae Bell Hensley Byrd of Flag Pond. “Bubba” was of the Baptist faith. He served his country proudly as a decorated retired veteran of the United States Army where he served as a Patriot Missile Crew Member and was also a combat engineer. His many decorations and medals included the Army Achievement Medal, Army Good Conduct Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Southwest Asia Service Medal with 2 Bronze Service Star (BSS), Army Service Ribbon, Overseas Service Ribbon, Sharpshooter Marksmanship Qualification Badge with Rifle Bar, Sharpshooter Marksmanship Qualification Badge with Grenade Bar, Driver and Mechanic.
He was preceded in death of grandparents: John L. and Velva Willis Byrd and Grace McIntosh Hensley; uncle and aunt: John L. Byrd, Jr. and Robbie Byrd.
Other than his parents, “Bubba” is survived by two sisters: Myra Harris and husband, Lonnie, Flag Pond, Melissa Arrowood and husband, Kenneth, Sr., Johnson City; two special nephews: Kenneth Arrowood, Jr., who was more like a brother, and William Arrowood; a special niece: Courtney Harris; Grandfather: Barnet Hensley, Flag Pond; Honorary nephew and niece: Michael Baker and Emily Williams; Honorary brother and sister: Tim and Judy Williams; Uncles and aunts: Clyde and Katrina Hensley, Flag Pond, Bertha Byrd, Olga Edwards and Dorris Byrd, all of Erwin, James and Joan King, Charles Cyle and Diana Byrd, all of Jonesborough; Numerous great uncles, great aunts, cousins and friends.
A celebration of “Bubba's” life will be held at 2:00 p.m. Tuesday, August 20, 2013, from the Robert Ledford Funeral Home Chapel. Reverend Craig Shelton and Pastor Charles David Byrd will officiate.
Active pallbearers will be Kenneth Arrowood, Sr., Kenneth Arrowood, Jr., Lonnie Harris, Clyde Hensley, Tim Williams, Coy Lee Harris, Ben Shelton, Michael Baker and Rick Turner.
Interment will follow in Evergreen Cemetery with military honors provided by Boone Dam VFW Post # 4933 and the Tennessee Army National Guard.
The family will receive friends from 5:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. Monday, August 19, 2013, at the funeral home.
