Eddie Banner, age 78, 139 Barker Suv. Ave, Gate City, Va., died Thursday, Aug. 9, 2012, at the Johnson City Medical Center. He was born in Unicoi County, Feb. 14, 1934, to the late Orville and Ida Hensley Banner.
He retired from the U.S. Navy, with the rank of Senior Chief, in 1972, after 20 years of service, participating in various police actions all around the world. After retiring from the Navy, he spent 20 years as a professor at Mountain Empire State College in Big Stone Gap, Va., where he retired in 1994.
Mr. Banner was a member of Northeast Church of Christ in Kingsport. He was also instrumental in forming the Valley Church of Christ in the Carter’s Valley Community.
In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his son, David Banner, on June 20, 2012; sister, Pauline McNabb, Love Fender and brothers, Gene Banner, Guy Banner, Niles Banner, Ferrell Banner, and Larry Banner.
Survivors include his wife of 57 years: Frankie Lance Banner; sons: Bryan Banner of Gate City, Va.; Greg Banner of O’Fallon, Ill.; brothers: Ray Banner and his wife Gladys ; Gerald “Bo” Banner and his wife Elane; Arnold Banner and his wife Sylvia, all of Erwin; sister-in-law: Charlotte Banner of Erwin; grandchildren: Timothy, Ethan and Faith Banner of Maryville, Tenn., and Jeremy and Aaron Banner of O’Fallon, Ill.
A funeral service will be held on Tuesday, Aug. 14, 2012, at 7 p.m., in the chapel of Valley Funeral Home with Minister Tim Hall officiating. Vocal selections will be under the direction of Boyd Holder.
The family will receive friends on Tuesday from 5 p.m. until service time at Valley Funeral Home. A committal service with military honors will be held on Wednesday, Aug. 15, at 11 a.m., in the Mausoleum Chapel of Evergreen Cemetery.
