Douglas Sullins, Sr.

Douglas Sullins, Sr., age 88, Erwin, passed away peacefully on Monday, December 16, 2019 at Hillview Health Center, while he was surrounded by his loving family. He was a native of Spruce Pine, NC but lived most of his life in Unicoi County. Douglas was a son of the late John C. and Lydia Dayton Sullins.

He was a United States Army Veteran. Douglas retired from the Johnson City Medical Center in March 1994 where he worked in the Engineering Department. He was a State of Tennessee Electrical Inspector from 1972-1984. Douglas also had his own lawn care business for many years.

Douglas was an active member of Fishery Community Church. He loved his church and church family. Douglas was a member of the National Horseshoe Pitching Association having won numerous awards over the years. He was part of the Senior Olympics where he received gold medals. Douglas was involved with many different bowling leagues over the years.

He was a member of the Senior Citizens Center and often did volunteer electrical work for the Center.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one son, Mark S. Sullins in 2018; one great grandson, Little Robbie Jones; two brothers: Andrew Sullins and Jack Sullins; three sisters: Betty Duggan, Margaret Grindstaff and Helen Whitson.

He leaves behind to cherish his memory, his loving wife of sixty-six years, Ava Randolph Sullins; one son, Doug Sullins, Jr. (Melinda), Erwin; two daughters: Donna Garves (Joe), Knoxville and Lisa McCurry (Toney), Erwin; one sister, Verna Lee Alford; daughter-in-law, Mary Jo Sullins, Erwin; seven grandchildren: Elizabeth Honeycutt, Marlie Sullins, Marshall Sullins, Sean McCurry, Stacy Sullins Bradford, Carmen Hubbard and Candace Sullins; three great grandchildren: Ashley Honeycutt, Brittany Eller and Ilysiah Cole Williams; many nieces and nephews also survive.

The family will receive friends from 5:00-7:00 PM on Thursday, December 19, 2019 in the Robert Ledford Funeral Home Chapel. Pastor Art Gibson will officiate at the 7:00 PM funeral service. Committal will be held at 11:00 AM on Friday, December 20, 2019 in the Mountain Home National Cemetery. Family and friends will serve as pallbearers. Everyone is asked to meet at the cemetery by 10:50 AM on Friday.
