Dan Shehan died on Sunday, May 3rd, after a short but courageous battle with cancer.
He is survived by his wife, Elyn Lewis, their son, Jeb, Jeb's wife Alex Nowlin, Jeb and Alex's son Drake, Elyn and Dan's daughter, Courtney and many relatives and uncountable friends.
The son of James Daniel and Bobbie Shehan, Dan grew up in Maryland, Virginia and Pennsylvania. At four years old, he was repairing fences beside his dad. At seven, he was driving tractors. He graduated from New Oxford High School in 1968, and held the 880 track record there for many years.
During the Vietnam War, Dan served in the US Navy. When he left the military, he went back to college, graduating with honors with a degree in engineering. He worked for Intel for much of his life, and retired only a few years ago.
After retirement, he served for a year on the Board of the Hillsboro Senior Center and volunteered with the Friends of the Hillsboro Library. Dan was a history buff and a student of wars, most recently WWI (because he had already exhausted WWII and the Civil War). Lately he had become an avid garage sale shopper and had started woodworking.
Like his dad, Dan was a hands-on person. Together with Elyn, he was an active member of the Rose City Thunderbird Club for over 25 years. He enjoyed fishing and other outdoor pursuits. A life-long farmer at heart, he also enjoyed his gardens, and he enjoyed going on Volkswalks with Elyn wherever they traveled.
A visitation period to share memories and offer support to the family of Dan Shehan will begin at 12:00 PM and continue until service time on Saturday, May 16, 2015 in the Chapel of Valley Funeral Home. A memorial service will be held at 2:00 PM in the Chapel of Valley Funeral Home on Saturday, May 16, 2015.
