Damon Bennett, age 70, of Erwin, died Friday, Jan. 21, 2011, at his son’s home.
Mr. Bennett was a native of Unicoi County and a son of the late Clarence and Inez Riddle Bennett.
He served in the U.S. Navy during the Vietnam War as a 3rd class corps man. He was an operating room technician with the Veterans Affairs Medical Center for 30 years until his retirement on Dec. 31, 1995.
Mr. Bennett was a member of Good Shepherd Missionary Baptist Church.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by daughter, Lori Bennett; sister, Marie Bennett; maternal grandmother, Carrie Riddle; maternal grandfather, Jim Riddle; paternal grandmother, Delia Bennett; paternal grandfather, John Bennett; aunts, Ethel Price, Birdie Harris, Vivian Frye and Birdie Harris; and uncles, Lawrence Riddle, Mack Riddle, Earl Bennett, Ernest Bennett, Charles Bennett and Troy Bennett.
Survivors include his wife, Marie Bennett of Erwin; son, Eugene Bennett and wife, Melissa, of Erwin; aunts, Ruth Gilbert, Erwin, Bessie Watson, Johnson City, Mae Riddle, Erwin, and Dora Bennett, Erwin; and granddaughter, Hannah Redshaw.
Funeral services were held Sunday, Jan. 23, 2011, at 2 p.m. in the Valley Funeral Home Chapel. The Revs. Monroe Willis and David Crutchfield officiated. Interment followed at Evergreen Cemetery.
Serving as pallbearers were Harry Mathes, Larry Norris, Ray White, John Treadway, Ronnie Erwin, David Griffith, Doug Clark, Larry Tittle, Larry Riddle and Ken Crowder. Honorary pallbearers were Bob Ford, Sam Keesecker, Damon Harris, Ronnie Bennett, Ketron Couch, Tommy Turner, Robert Cupp and Doug Guinn.
