Coy Rice, Sr., age 85, 111 New Camp Road, Flag Pond, went home to be with the Lord at 2:53 p.m. Tuesday, November 5, 2013, at Johnson City Medical Center after a lengthy illness. He was a lifelong resident of Flag Pond and was a son of the late Hobert Calvin (H.C.) and Esther Bertha Tipton Rice. Mr. Rice was a proud veteran of the United States Army serving during World War II. He retired in 1991 from Nuclear Fuel Services as a chemical operator after 28 years of service. Mr. Rice was a dedicated lifelong member of Upper Rice Creek Baptist Church. He loved to farm and telling stories and tall tales to people and especially loved making his granddaughter and grandson laugh.
Other than parents, Mr. Rice was preceded in death by two brothers: Floyd Rice and Dallas Rice.
He is survived by his loving and devoted wife of 52 years, Eileen Silvers Rice; two sons: Coy Rice, Jr. and wife, Geri, Nashville and Terry Rice, Flag Pond; grandson, Matthew Rice, Nashville and granddaughter, Amanda Rice, Omaha, Nebraska; two sisters: Clara Moore, Winfield, Illinois and Mary Sue Rice, Flag Pond; two special aunts: Audie Rice, Erwin and Lou Shelton, Jonesborough. Several nieces and nephews also survive.
Graveside funeral service for Mr. Rice will be held at 11:00 a.m. Friday, November 8, 2013, in Evergreen Cemetery. Reverend Joey Murdock and Reverend Harold Lewis will officiate. Active pallbearers will be Matthew Rice, J. B. Watts, Dwight Briggs, Howard McIntosh, Jamie Clouse and Kelse Watts.
Those attending the graveside service are asked to meet at the cemetery by 10:45 a.m. Friday.
The family will receive friends from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. Thursday, November 7, 2013, at Robert Ledford Funeral Home and other times at the family home. Special organ music for the visitation will be provided by Inez Chandler.
