Claude Lewis, 88, of Erwin, died Saturday, Sept. 17, 2011 at the NHC Healthcare Center in Johnson City. Mr. Lewis was a native of Mitchell County, N.C. and the son of the late William M. and Cora Webb Lewis.
He was a member of Trinity Freewill Baptist Church. He was a barber until his retirement in 1980.
Other than his parents, Mr. Lewis is preceded in death by, his wife of 60 years, Alverta Johnson Lewis; brothers: Conway and Howard Lewis, and sisters: Bertha Tilley, Tessie Hopson, and Pansy Oaks.
Survivors include sons: Richard Lewis and wife, Vickie, of Bristol, Tenn., and Gary Lewis of Erwin; daughter: Elaine Smith and husband, Nathan, of Franklin; grandchildren: Amanda Lewis, Phillip Lewis, Cody Smith, and Justin Smith; great grandchildren: Haley Smith, Makayla Smith, Jamie Smith, and Phillip Smith; brothers: Boyd Lewis of Johnson City, Hoy Lewis of Ashland, Ky., James Lewis of Jonesborough, Geneva Honeycutt of Johnson City, Cassie Bacon of Florida, and JoAnn Ledford of Jonesborough.
The funeral service will be conducted on Wednesday, Sept. 21, at 1 p.m., in the Chapel of Valley Funeral Home with the Rev. Andy Patterson officiating. Vocal selections will be provided by the Trinity Trio.
The family will receive friends from 11 a.m. until service time. Interment will follow the service at McInturff Cemetery in Erwin. Mr. Lewis’ nephews and grandsons will serve as pallbearers.
