Carlos W. Banks

After a long and courageous battle with cancer, Carlos W. Banks, age 81, went to be with the Lord on Sunday, October 20th. He graduated Unicoi County High School and attended East Tennessee University in Johnson City. He was born in Unicoi County to Cecil and Elsie Callahan Banks. He was a member of the Baptist faith. He was a Mason and served a tour of duty in Germany in the U.S. Army. He worked for a time at the Southern Pacific railroad in California before moving to Florida. He retired from the Kennedy Space Center after 46 years of service with General Dynamics and Lockheed Martin during the Mercury, Gemini, Apollo, and Space Shuttle launches. He was proud to know John Glenn and launch him into orbit. He volunteered as a coach and umpire with the Little League. He loved life, family and friends, gardening, sports, football and the Vols!

He is preceded in death in addition to parents, by his twin sister Carolyn, sisters Mildred (Sid) Hillman and Joyce (Jim) McKinney, and brother Harold (Myrtle) Banks. Left to hold his memories are his wife of 50 years, Margaret Banks, son Kent Banks of Oviedo, FL, daughter April (Jason) Taylor of Ontario Canada, grandchildren Karl and Kent Banks, Jr. of Florida, Brandon and Madison Taylor of Canada, brother Wilbur (Shirley) Banks, sister Betty Hazellief of Orlando, FL, Shirley (Bobby) White of Erwin, several nieces and nephews.

The life of Carlos W. Banks will be remembered and honored in a funeral service to be at 12:00 PM on Thursday, October 24, 2013 in the Chapel of Valley Funeral Home. Reverend Kevin Laws will officiate. A visitation period to share memories and offer support to the family will begin at 11:00 AM and continue until service time on Thursday at Valley Funeral Home. A graveside committal service will follow at Evergreen Cemetery with Military Honors provided by the Unicoi County Jr ROTC.

In lieu of flowers the family requests donations to Southside Freewill Baptist, 1313 Chestoa Pike Erwin, TN 37650 and to the St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital in Memphis, TN for cancer research.
