Burnie Lee Peterson Jr., age 67, of Erwin, died Tuesday, Jan. 1, 2013, at his residence, after a lengthy illness. Mr. Peterson was surrounded by his family. He was a son of the late Burnie and Evelyn Bailey Peterson.
Mr. Peterson was a graduate of Unicoi County High School. He was the retired owner/operator of Peterson Construction and later dedicated 15 years to Northeast Youth Harbour, mentoring youth and troubled teens.
Mr. Peterson was a member of Central Baptist Church.
Survivors include his loving wife of 45 years, Sharon Gilliland Peterson; three daughters, Jaunice Peterson Brumit and her husband Art, of Covington, Va., Jeanne Strother and Herman Chandley Jr., of Erwin, and Joy Peterson, who was also his special caregiver, of the home; six grandchildren: Jonathan Brumit, Brooke Strother, Bryant Strother, Brett Strother, Lee Chandley and Justin Chandley; brothers and sisters: Larry Peterson and wife Negatha, Sandra Raynor, Barbara Lewis and husband Ronnie, Sylvia Banner and husband Arnold, Helen Lloyd, Marsha Bagby and husband, Reed, Mary Nell Lane and husband Howard “Boone,” Gary Peterson and wife Joyce, sister-in-law Hilda Davies and husband A.J. “Buzz” Davies.
Funeral service for Mr. Peterson was held at 8 p.m., Thursday, Jan. 3, from the Robert Ledford Funeral Home Chapel. The Rev. Art Brumit and the Rev. Kevin Laws officiated.
Interment was Friday, Jan. 4, at 11 a.m., at Evergreen Cemetery.
Pallbearers were Kenneth Jones, Randy Jones, Jonathan Brumit, Bryant Strother, Brett Strother and Herman Chandley Jr. Honorary pallbearers were Kevin Jones and Bobby L. Jones.
Accompanying the casket from hearse to grave site was Mr. Peterson’s only granddaughter, Brooke Haley Strother.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to Amedisys Hospice and local youth sports organizations.
