Bob Likens, a loving husband and father, went to be with the Lord on July 31st, 2013. A life-long native of Erwin, Tennessee he was a man who loved God and his family. Bob was preceded in death by his parents, Nora Arrington and Percy Odenhall Likens, and his wife, Charlotte Hood Likens.
Bob was a true mountain man who loved the outdoors and his backyard garden. He was a graduate of Unicoi County High School and attended Virginia Tech and East Tennessee State University. He helped build the Nuclear Fuel services plant in the late 1950s and then joined the Clinchfield Railroad working in the accounting department. He moved into the transportation department in the 1970s and retired from the CSX railroad as Trainmaster of the Erwin Yard after 34 years of service. He was an active member of Ninth Street Baptist Church for over 40 years serving in a variety of leadership positions such as chairman of the deacons, Sunday School Director and Sunday School teacher. He witnessed to many people over the years in both word and deed.
Bob is survived by his loving partner and wife, Janice Likens, son Allen Likens and wife Brenda of Kingsport, TN, and daughter Kim Lavin and husband Keith of Somerset, NJ. Five grown grandchildren: Lori Likens, Chris Likens, Cody Likens, Lydia Fries and husband Alex, and David Scheller and wife Sara and their son Chase, Bobs only great-grand child. He also leaves behind extended family step-son Joe Jaynes and wife Annette with their two children Savannah and Sydney of Greenville, SC and brother-in-law Wallace Neas and wife Paulette of Fort Collins, Colorado.
The family extends an invitation to join them in a Celebration of Life service on Saturday, August 3, 2013 at the Ninth Street Baptist Church. Receiving of friends will begin as 12:00 Noon followed immediately by the Celebration Service at 2:00 PM. Reverends Chris Ward and Rob Moor are in charge of the service. Serving as active pallbearers will be Chris Likens, Cody Likens, Steve Kegley, Tim Love, Tony Harris, Bob Minton, Frank Cooke, and Ed Bolton.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the American Cancer Society, 508 Princeton Road, Suite 102, Johnson City, TN 37601, in memory of Robert Odenhall Likens life.
