Bessie Horton Briggs, age 94, Unicoi, died Friday, Dec. 28, 2012, at the Tennessee State Veterans Home in Murfreesboro. Mrs. Briggs died on her 94th birthday after a lengthy illness.
She was a daughter of the late Bernie and Mollie Horton of Unicoi.
Mrs. Briggs, a life-long homemaker, a beloved mother, grandmother, great grandmother and great-great grandmother. She was a member of Unicoi Freewill Baptist Church.
Other than her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Isaac in 1991; her son: Roger Sherrill (Doots) in 1962; one brother: Frank, 2006; and one sister: Callie Clark, 1957.
Survivors include one daughter: Lorraine Sambat and husband, Alan Williams, of Murfreesboro; two sons: Isaac J. Briggs and wife Novella, Jonesville, Va., and Gerald Patrick Briggs and wife Sally, Kings Mountain, N.C.; 8 grandchildren: Ben, Bryan, Byron, Brandon, Mitch, Marcus, Millicent and Shane; four great-granddaughters: Kelly, Amber, Savanna and Bailey and one great-grandson: Evan; four great-great grandchildren: Evan, Emma, Lily and Elijah; one brother: Willard Horton and wife Barbara, Unicoi; one sister-in-law: Frances Horton, Unicoi; and several nieces and nephews also survive.
A graveside family service for Mrs. Briggs was held at Swingle Cemetery, Unicoi, Monday afternoon, Dec. 31. Grandsons served as pall bearers. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Tennessee State Veterans Home, 345 Compton Road, Murfreesboro, TN 37129.
