Arthur West “A.W.” Johnson, 91, of Erwin, passed away Saturday, May 7, 2016 at the Center on Aging and Health. Mr. Johnson was a native of Bakersville, NC and a son of the late Ed and Nellie Edwards Johnson of Bakersville, NC. He served in the United States Army during WWII, where he served in the 160th Combat Engineers for 3 years with General George Patton’s 3rd Army.

He was with the company that liberated the Erwin 9. When he was 89 his family took him to Indiana to find and decorate the grave location of his great-great-great-great-great grandfather who fought in the Revolutionary War. He attended college at Lee’s McRae College and Milligan College. He attended Ninth Street Baptist Church. Mr. Johnson retired in 1986 after 41 years from the Clinchfield Railroad as a Brakeman/Conductor.

A. W. has left behind to cherish his memories: Wife of 65 years; Louise Carver Johnson Son; Terry Johnson and wife Trish, of Unicoi Grandchildren; Ashton Willis and husband Clint, of Erwin, Jordan Johnson of Unicoi; Great-Grandson; Karter Willis of Erwin The family wishes to express a sincere thank you to the Staff of Unicoi County Memorial Hospital and the Center on Aging and Health for all of their care.

The family respectfully request the honor of your presence as we offer tribute and remember the life of Arthur West “A. W.” Johnson in a graveside service to be held at 1:00 PM Wednesday, May 11, 2016, at Roselawn Memory Gardens with military honors. Brother Rick Babin will officiate. Serving as pallbearers are: Jordan Johnson, Doug Silvers, Wade Edwards, Harold Carver, Ronnie Johnson and Danny Carver. Honorary pallbearers will be the Goodwill Sunday School class.

Those who plan to attend will meet at Valley Funeral Home at 12:30 PM Wednesday to go in procession to the cemetery. Condolences and memories may be shared with the family and viewed at www.valleyfuneralhome.net.
