An era is coming to an end at Ninth Street Baptist Church in Erwin.
Teresa Mitchell, who has been at the helm of the office at Ninth Street Baptist Church as secretary for more almost half a century, has called it a career.
“I’m retiring after 46 years,” Mitchell told The Erwin Record.
For Mitchell, her long stint as church secretary was simply the place she needed to be. She said that it didn’t take long for her to realize that Ninth Street Baptist was where she was supposed to serve Christ and the community.
“I hadn’t worked here long when I felt the calling that this was the place God wanted me to be,” Mitchell said. “I started out part time but it wasn’t long before I came on full time.”
Mitchell, who actually attends Erwin’s Shallow Ford Baptist Church, said that she has enjoyed serving Ninth Street Baptist for the past 46 years.
“When they hired me, they hired outside the church,” Mitchell said.
“It has actually worked out well,” she added. “People are sometimes more comfortable coming to me when they need to talk because they know I’m not a member of Ninth Street. Sometimes people feel more at ease to open up knowing that. I will miss those I love, worked with, and served over the years.”
The legacy that Mitchell leaves behind is one that will forever shape Ninth Street Baptist Church.
“I’ve kept up with the congregation and the important dates and milestones,” Mitchell said. “I record all of the contributions to the church and keep all of our records.”
For Mitchell, the opportunity to become more active in her home church is going to be a welcome change of pace.
“I will be more active at Shallow Ford,” Mitchell said.
Mitchell is already training her replacement, who has huge shoes to fill. Her last day on the job was March 31.
“They hired Joy King to take my place, and she’s going to do a great job,” Mitchell said.
