It was a beautiful day to be outside as children and youth from the 4-H Youth Development Organization gathered at the Bogart-Bowman Cabin Thursday afternoon to learn about forestry and give some basic care to the trees around the cabin.
Along with Ty Petty, Unicoi County Extension Agent, the kids were joined by Frosty Leavy, a professor of botany at East Tennessee State University and Martin Miller, a former U.S. Forest Service employee who also has extensive experience in working with Sycamore Shoals in Elizabethton.
Petty, Leavy and Miller guided the children around the cabin, taking a moment to show them the different type of trees around the property.
For Petty, taking care of the trees Thursday was a big part of what he sees as a service to the community.
