Catholic mission holds groundbreaking

Members of St. Michael the Archangel Catholic Mission made it official on Wednesday, April 8, by breaking ground on their property on Mohawk Drive.
Grading and leveling of the ground will begin next week, according to Father Tom Charters. The work will be performed by Mark’s Grading and Landscaping. Bill Onsket of Azimuth Engineering, Inc of Greeneville was also on hand for the event.
“This is only the initial step,” Father Charters said. “Once the land has been graded and seeded, we need to begin building. However, the first step toward a permanent facility is raising money. We had to get a loan to complete the grading. Next will be designing a multi-purpose building for a worship space along with enough room to hold religion classes for our children, plus offices for administration.
“It is a big undertaking, but our members are excited about the possibilities. St. Michael the Archangel Mission desires to be an integral member of the Erwin and Unicoi County communities.”
The layout of the property is also designed to include a half-mile walking track and, one day, a soccer field, according to Charters. Both facilities will also be made available to the public.
