United Way’s COVID-19 relief campaign reaches goal

By Richard Rourk

A local organization has reached its fundraising goal for COVID-19 relief.

“The United Way of Unicoi County is excited to announce that the $10,000 community giving goal for the COVID-19 Community Relief Fund has been met,” United Way Spokeswoman Lynnsey Seagroves said.

The fund was established in early May by the local United Way Board to support Unicoi County residents and small businesses facing financial challenges due to the virus.

A total of $20,000 in contributions were initially pledged by the Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA), Erwin Utilities, and the United Way of Unicoi County. Last month, the local United Way Board asked for community support in raising an additional $10,000 in donations for the fund.

According to United Way of Unicoi County Board President Lee Brown, to date, the United Way of Unicoi County has received $10,098 in donations from the community and $20,000 from businesses for a total contribution of $30,098.

“On behalf of our local United Way Board, I would like to extend our deepest gratitude to the outstanding members of this community who helped us reach the $10,000 goal,” Brown said. “Together, we are providing $30,000 in assistance to our neighbors who are experiencing financial hardship due to COVID-19.”

Brown presented a check in the amount of $10,000 to Region AHEAD on June 8.

According to Brown, Region AHEAD will direct these donations to small businesses in Unicoi County. Small businesses within Unicoi County can complete an application through the Region AHEAD website at www.regionAHEAD.com. Questions about the Region AHEAD scope or application process can be emailed to [email protected]

Unicoi County residents who are experiencing job reduction or loss due to the COVID-19 outbreak and need energy assistance are encouraged to call the Neighborhood Service Center at 743-4103.

Those interested in making additional donations to the fund are asked to mail a check to the United Way of Unicoi County at P.O.
