Unicoi wraps up holiday plans

If residents are seeking holiday cheer this season, they’re sure to find it in abundance in the town of Unicoi. This year, as in years past, the town will hold a decorating contest, as well as a Christmas at the Cabin event.
The town of Unicoi’s Christmas at the Cabin celebration is set for Saturday, Dec. 11, from 4-7 p.m. The event will be held at the historic Bogart-Bowman cabin, located at Buffalo Creek Park. Sponsored by the Unicoi History Committee, the event will spread both Christmas cheer and details of the past. In fact, those in attendance will get the unique opportunity to travel back in time to experience a Christmas evening as it would have been in the 1790s.
Linda March, events coordinator for the town of Unicoi, said the Christmas at the Cabin event, now in its second year, provides a unique opportunity for residents and other guests to experience an old-fashioned Christmas.
“This has become a really special event for the town of Unicoi,” she said. “It’s a real community event with a unique atmosphere. It’s about bringing folks together to experience a spontaneous, old-time gathering. The cabin lends itself to this type of event.”
The evening will feature period costume, decorations, a roaring fire, refreshments, and the singing of Christmas carols. The grand finale of the event will be the lighting of the town of Unicoi Christmas tree.
“The Historical Committee puts all of this together,” March said. “Lisa Willis, the chair of the committee, and others on the committee have worked very hard, and we appreciate all they do. They get everything together for this event, and they work very hard to preserve the history of Unicoi.”
Aside from the numerous festivities at the Christmas at the Cabin event, the town’s very own 18th Century Father Christmas will be on site to collect donations of non-perishable food items to be distributed to the Unicoi Church of God Food Ministry. The food ministry serves the needs of families in Unicoi County and beyond.
In addition to the festivities at the Bogart-Bowman cabin, the town of Unicoi also invites town residents to participate in this year’s Christmas Decorating Contest. There are three categories contestants can enter, including Most Creative Christmas Theme, Best Use of Lighting, and Overall Beauty.
“The decorating contest gives Unicoi residents a chance to shine,” March said. “We’ve had the contest for the last seven or eight years, and everyone who participates has been really enthusiastic about the contest. There’s a lot of imagination and creativity involved. Everyone gets into the spirit of Christmas, and it’s a lot of fun.”
Decorations will be judged on Dec. 18 by a secret panel of town residents. The winners in each category will be announced at the Dec. 20 meeting of the town’s Board of Mayor and Aldermen and awarded a $75 gift card.
Any Unicoi resident wishing to participate in the contest should call Unicoi Town Hall at 743-7162.
