TBI begins investigation into missing funds

A Tennessee Bureau of Investigation spokesman confirmed that the agency is currently conducting an investigation into missing county funds.
In an email to The Erwin Record, Josh DeVine, TBI Public Information Officer, said District Attorney General Tony Clark requested the TBI investigate $1,000 reportedly missing from Unicoi County jail funds from a cash bond.
According to Unicoi County Sheriff Mike Hensley, a bookkeeper in his department first noticed the missing funds and notified him. Hensley and the bookkeeper determined that the funds were missing from the jail. Hensley said he then immediately contacted Clark and requested the TBI investigate the matter for him.
DeVine also said the case remains open and active.
Hensley said because the investigation is ongoing no other comments can be made at this time.
