Subject of “lost” silver mine focus of program

From Staff Reports

Unicoi resident Randall “Randy” Ledford will share stories about his research into the Garland silver mine on Unaka Mountain during a lunch and program at The Gathering Place at 119 N Main Ave., Erwin, starting at 6 pm. on Saturday, Aug. 14.

Ledford is the son of Mary Ruth Garland whose family is connected with the mine. Ledford, who has conducted extensive research into the legend of the mine, believes he knows exactly where the mine is located. He is also in the process of writing a book based on his research into the colorful history of the “lost” mine.

He is seeking to interview people who have information about the mine. He plans to record any shared stories and accounts for his upcoming book.

In addition, he is seeking copies of the book “Silver in the Unaka” by Buddy Johnson.

The event had been scheduled originally for Saturday, Aug. 7, but Ledford needed to postpone.

The public is welcome. For more information on the program, email Ledford at [email protected] or call him at (423) 283-7770.
