The Unicoi County Republican Party will soon be meeting to appoint an individual to be its candidate on the August General Election ballot for Unicoi County Assessor of Property.
During the county Republican primary on Tuesday, March 1, Margaret Shelton Seward, who died in the early morning hours of Tuesday morning, won the race for Unicoi County Assessor of Property.
Seward received 1,570 votes.
Candidate Alan “Rocky” McInturff received 1,116 votes; candidate Wayne Peterson, who died Feb. 16, received 560 votes.
Unicoi County Administrator of Elections Sarah Bailey previously said that because the race was part of a county Republican primary, the vacancy created by the election of a deceased candidate would put the appointment in the hands of the county Republican party.
“We will meet after the results of the election have been certified,” County Party Chairman Jim Buchanan said Tuesday night regarding the appointment of someone to run in the August election.
Primary results are scheduled to be certified by the Unicoi County Election Commission on March 17.
The procedure for determining the appointment was yet to be decided as of Tuesday night.
