School system director accused of misappropriating $21,000

The director of finances for the Unicoi County School system resigned Tuesday, May 25, amid a state audit that accuses her of reportedly taking an estimate of $21,000 for her personal use.
According to a press release from Director of Schools Denise Brown, the Office of the Comptroller of the Treasury for the state of Tennessee identified the “activity of misspent and unauthorized disbursement of funds.”
Angie Williams was suspended without pay on May 7, and she submitted her resignation effective May 25.
“Auditors are completing review of all records, both central office and school based accounts, over which Mrs. Williams had control and expenditure authority,” Brown said.
The audit is not complete and the investigation is continuing, Brown said.
Rumors had been circulating for at least two weeks about an audit, but state and school officials refused to confirm that an audit was even under way.
Brown said she will have no other comment at this time.
