During a regularly scheduled meeting on Thursday, April 12, the Unicoi County Board of Education voted 5-1 to stop using the the AdvancED/SACS accreditation process for all schools.

“Due to the fact that so many new requirements have been added to principal responsibilities, we
had a discussion with principals concerning things that we are currently doing that we could stop doing,” Director of Schools Denise Brown said during the meeting. “The principals felt that other improvement processes that we are using are much more effective for our schools/system.”

Brown went on to say that Dr. Mickey Hatcher, who has attended AdvancED/SACS meetings and supervises the accreditation process with the system’s principals, has recommended the system
stop using the AdvancED/SACS accreditation.
