School Board chooses English

John English, a veteran of the Unicoi County School System, was unanimously chosen as the new director of schools by the Unicoi County Board of Education during a meeting on Thursday, May 14.
“I appreciate the board having the confidence in me to give me this opportunity,” English told The Erwin Record following the vote. “I am looking forward to working with the board, the school system employees, students and community.”
English began working for the school system in 1998. He served three years as an eighth grade math teacher before joining the administration at Unicoi County Middle School as an assistant principal. After working for two years in that role, English then became the principal of UCMS.
He worked as the principal for nine years, then moved to the Central Office to work as the system’s director of federal programs three years ago.
Throughout his tenure with the school system, English has also served as a coach, including 12 seasons as the head coach of the Unicoi County High School Blue Devil basketball team.
English will not begin his tenure as director until he officially signs a contract with the Board of Education. This is set to take place during a special called meeting of the board on May 29 at 6 p.m. at the Central Office. English’s tenure will then begin on June 1.
During a work session on May 11, the board ironed out the details of the contract they will offer English. According to discussion from that work session, the contract will be a 4-year contract and will include an annual salary of $100,700.
