The case against Rick Butler, a former Unicoi County
Sheriffs Department offi cer, will now be heard by
Senior Judge Jon Kerry Blackwood.
Butler was indicted by a
Unicoi County grand jury on
June 10 on two counts of fi ling a
false report, and one count each
of reckless driving and failure
to exercise due care.
During an appearance before
Judge Stacy Street in Unicoi
County Criminal Court on Friday,
June 28, Street told Butler
and Butlers attorney, Jim
Bowman, that he would recuse
himself from presiding over the
case against Butler. Street said
he decided to do so based on his familiarity with Butler,
as well as having called Butler to be a witness in
cases he had tried.
Also during Fridays court appearance, Street told
Butler that Criminal Court Judge Robert Cupp will also
recuse himself from presiding over the case, also because
of his familiarity with Butler.
