Relay For Life of Unicoi County to hold 80s-themed kickoff

The American Cancer Society Relay For Life of Unicoi County will hold a kickoff for the annual event on Saturday, Feb. 7 from 7-9 p.m. at the Unicoi County High School cafeteria. The Society is inviting people who are interested in learning more and getting involved in the event to attend.
The kickoff program will honor cancer survivors and caregivers and feature the Society’s mission to save lives from cancer.
Attendees will have the opportunity to register a team for the Relay For Life event, which will be held Saturday, June 13 at the Unicoi County High School track.
In going along with this year’s event, the kickoff will feature an 80s theme – to celebrate the 30th year of Relay For Life, which started in 1985 in Tacoma, Wash. Members of the community are invited to attend and wear their favorite 80s clothing. There may even be some 80s music and dancing following the program.
Relay For Life is a community event where teams and individuals camp out and take turns walking or running around the track. Each team has at least one participant on the track at all times and participates in fundraising that supports the American Cancer Society’s mission to save lives and finish the fight against cancer.
Four million people participated in more than 6,000 events worldwide in 2014. Last year, more than 1,000 people participated in Unicoi County and raised more than $50,000.
“The Relay For Life movement unites communities across the globe to celebrate people who have battled cancer, remember loved ones lost, and take action to finish the fight once and for all,” said Renea Jones, Unicoi County event lead. “This is our community’s opportunity to fight back against cancer.”
