Rail excursion planned for July

From Staff Reports
The Watauga Valley Railroad Historical Society & Museum’s Summer 2012 Rail Excursion through the scenic Hiwassee River Gorge in East Tennessee will be Saturday, July 14.
The excursion is a 50-mile, 3½-hour round-trip rail journey along the river to the famous “Hiwassee Loop.”
The excursion will pass through the Narrows, where the Hiwassee River flows through rock channels and the Bald Mountain Loop. The track actually passes over itself during a corkscrew climb up the mountain near Farner, Tenn., over a high trestle. Tracks along this route parallel the river for most of its length, providing views of the lower gorge.
The train is general seating and features cushioned seats with large windows. 1950s-era diesel locomotives will pull the vintage enclosed climate-controlled coaches. Passengers will be asked to move from one side of the aisle to the other before the return trip to ensure that every passenger will be able to view all the scenery in secluded areas along the line.
The excursion will begin in downtown Johnson City at 7:15 a.m. July 14 at the State of Franklin parking lot, where passengers will board a motor coach to Etowah, Tenn. Passengers will also be picked up at the Century 21 parking lot at 2040 E. Andrew Johnson Hwy, Greeneville, at 7:45 a.m.. A map will be enclosed with each ticket order with detail directions.
Lunch will be on your own before boarding the train at 12:30 p.m., with the train departing at 12:45 p.m. and returning to Etowah at 4:15 p.m. The motor coach will depart Etowah at 4:30 p.m. with expected return to Greeneville at 7:45 p.m. and Johnson City at 8:15 p.m.
Tickets are $83 per adult and $73 per child ages 2 to 12. Meals are not included. The ticket includes train ride and motor coach to and from Etowah.
