On Hallowed Ground

On Sunday, May 27, the town of Erwin and the Veterans Memorial Committee hosted a Memorial Day Ceremony for the community at Veterans Memorial Park in Erwin. Unicoi County Commissioner Bill Hensley opened the ceremony, which included musical selections by Allan Foster and a tribute to veterans by Russell Brackins and the Rev. Craig Shelton. The Rev. Garland James served as the speaker for the event. “It is a pleasure that we can stand on hallowed ground to honor those who have given their lives so that we might have life more abundantly,” James said. “Our job, our duty and our responsibility as we go forth is to make sure, as Abraham Lincoln said in the Gettysburg Address, that these people did not give their lives in vain.” The Unicoi County High School Jr. ROTC presented a 21-gun salute and “Taps” at the end of the ceremony.
