Officials respond to cash shortage

One of the six findings reported in the Unicoi County audit for the fiscal year ending June 30, 2013, involved a cash shortage of $4,845.75 which existed in the Unicoi County Sheriff’s Department as of the end of the fiscal year. In a letter to Sheriff Mike Hensley dated July 9, Kevin B. Huffman, investigative Audit Manager for the Division of Investigations, Financial and Compliance Unit of the Tennessee Comptroller of the Treasury, states that his office “received an allegation that a retired state employee was receiving retirement benefits from the state’s Tennessee Consolidated Retirement System (TCRS) and working an excessive number of hours as a part-time administrative
assistant for the Unicoi County Sheriff’s Department in violation of TCRS guidelines.”
