Man sought in death of S.C. law-enforcement officer arrested in Unicoi County

Moments after receiving a BOLO, or be-on-the-look-out, police alert, a Tennessee Highway Patrol Trooper stopped a vehicle on Exit 37 of Interstate 26 driven by a man authorities say is wanting in the death of a South Carolina sheriff’s deputy.

According to THP Trooper John Lunceford, Jeffrey Bailey was arrested and charged with being a fugitive from justice after Lunceford stopped Bailey for not wearing a seatbelt.

Lunceford said he noticed the white truck Bailey was driving just after he received the alert to be on the look out for a vehicle matching Bailey’s vehicle.

Lunceford said he followed the vehicle to the Erwin on-ramp of I-26 and alerted other law-enforcement officials of the situiation. He then stopped Bailey for not wearing a seatbelt.

Bailey was transported to Unicoi County Jail early Tuesday evening.

In addition to the THP, Unicoi County Sheriff’s Department and Erwin Police Department personnel were on the scene.
