Kevin Lewis, sports editor for The Erwin Record, dies

Kevin C. Lewis, an award-winning sports writer for The Erwin Record, died Thursday, Nov. 4, at his home in Greene County. He was 52.
A native of Staten Island, N.Y., Lewis had served as sports editor for The Erwin Record since August 2006, where he devoted his time to in-depth coverage of Unicoi County High School sports, as well as pulling together information about other athletics – everything from children’s football programs and Little League to sporting activities at the Unicoi County Family YMCA.
He was instrumental in the success of the OT, The Erwin Record’s weekly sports supplement that is produced in a tab-size, magazine format. Now in Volume 3, the OT has always had Lewis’ stamp of excellence throughout its pages.
In addition to covering Unicoi County sports, he also wrote a weekly column titled “Off the Field.”
While at the Record, Lewis won several Tennessee Press Association and Society of Professional Journalism awards for sports writing. His work earned first-place honors in 2008 and 2010 in TPA’s statewide competition.
Before coming to work for the Record and his move to Tennessee, Lewis was a sports writer for the Staten Island Register and hosted a sports show on public access television in New York.
Lewis was a exuberant fan of the New York Yankees and the New York Giants.
“We are saddened and disheartened at the loss of Kevin, our co-worker and our friend,” said Mark A. Stevens, the Record’s publisher. “This is a great loss for our newspaper and our community. He loved covering the Blue Devils and had made many friends among parents, students and coaches. He will be missed.”
