Holiday doubles as activist’s 78th birthday

Living the life of Janice Johnson means not only celebrating St. Patrick’s Day on March 17, but also her birthday.
For more than 50 years, Johnson served the Unicoi County citizenry before retiring in 2007.
Johnson retired from her position as a deputy in the Unicoi County Trustee’s office on New Years Eve that year.
Now, Johnson said she enjoys spending her time volunteering with local organizations.
“I love to be active,” Johnson said.
Johnson said she is currently a member of the Erwin Kiwanis Club and Erwin Monday Club.
“I love the clubs and I wish more people would come out,” Johnson said.
This year, Johnson spent time with seniors at the Clinchfield Senior Adult Center in celebration of the holiday.
She played piano and sang hymns while donning her green leprechaun attire and green hat, which she said is from Ireland.
She was very excited to entertain people during the festivities at the Senior Center.
“They had everything,” she said.
Johnson said one of her goals in life is to always volunteer her time in the community and spread cheer.
