Hikers seek assistance from locals

Three day hikers who ran into a longer-than expected journey found Unicoi County ready to lend a hand on the evening of Feb. 20, Unicoi County Sheriff’s Department Investigator Mike Hensley said.

The hikers called 911 while hiking the Sam’s Gap to Devil’s Fork Gap section of the Appalachian Trail in Unicoi County when “It got dark on them,” said Hensley. “They didn’t realize the distance and terrain
they’d be hiking.” Hensley said they immediately called the Unaka Mountain Search and Rescue team.
