Free workshop offered on diabetes by Unicoi County Health Department

Diabetes is a complicated disease that can strike fear, confusion, and helplessness in diagnosed people and caregivers, according to a press release issued recently by the Unicoi County Health Department.
People with diabetes must deal not only with their disease, but also with the impact this has on their lives and emotions. A self-management approach to diabetes education gives people the knowledge, tools and confidence to take day-by-day responsibility of their diabetes care, the release stated.
On Thursday, Feb. 21, the Unicoi County Health Department and Erwin Housing Authority will be offering a free Take Charge of Your Diabetes Program workshop. The 6-week program is designed for people with diabetes and caregivers to learn basic skills necessary to self-manage their diabetes and work effectively with their health care professionals.
The Take Charge of Your Diabetes Program is conducted by two leaders certified by Stanford University Diabetes Self-Management Program Master Trainers. Classes will be held every Thursday at the Erwin Housing Authority Community Building, 750 Carolina Ave., Erwin, from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m.
This program is open to the public and free of charge. Participants will receive a free Chronic Disease Handbook and relaxation CD.
For more information, or to sign up for the program, please contact Becky Cassell, public health educator at 743-9103, ext. 310 or Lori Rice, Erwin Housing Authority Director, at 743-5231.
