The Unicoi County School System is now looking for a buyer for the vacant Love Chapel Elementary School building and property.
During a regularly scheduled meeting of the Unicoi County Board of Education on Thursday, Jan. 9, board members voted 4-0 to classify the six-acre site as surplus property. Board Chairperson Renea Jones-Rogers and board members Judy Webb, Victor Price and Lisa White voted in favor of the classification. Board members Tyler Engle and Rick Butler were absent.
The appearance of a sinkhole on the Love Chapel campus in August 2012 prompted school system officials to move students to the Unicoi County Intermediate School and Middle School to complete the 2012-2013 school year.
Testing of the Love Chapel property, which revealed that further sinkhole activity was present, led school system officials to permanently close the campus in early 2013. Love Chapel students now attend school in a campus made up of modular buildings. This campus is located between Unicoi County High School and Intermediate School.
